Mourning cloak

This Mourning cloak, found at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir on Saturday, takes a breather from dancing with a partner. Many thanks to Tina and Eva for help with the identification!

David, we have a guide to butterflies and moths. This is a butterfly called Mourning Cloak (Latin name: Nymphalis antiopa).

Where exactly and when did you see him? At this time of the year? It’s still very cold. The description in the guide says that it lives in Europe and temperate Asia, but occurs in North America to Central Mexico.

I’ve never seen ANY butterflies around here at this time of the year. Maybe it’s a sign of global warming.

I enjoy your photos very much, but if you could say when and where you took the photo, that would be great.

Also, I’m not technically knowledgeable enough, but wonder if there is a way for your blog to send links to your blog postings to the Chestnut Hill Reservoir Forum?

    Best,

    Eva

Hi, Eva. Thanks for looking him up for me. This butterfly was on the hill next to the ice rink. Right before I found him, I am pretty sure I saw a Phoebe, but he flew off before I could get a photograph. It really is spring!
