We made several Osprey sightings while in Florida. This one was circling over the water at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida.

Nearby, one rests on a tree.

Canoeing on the Hillsborough River in Florida, we encountered at least a half dozen alligators.



A Little blue heron is decked out in breeding plumage at the Hillsborough River State Park.


The Hillsborough River State Park had more sun-bathing turtles than I have ever seen in one place.

Apparently, they enjoy the Superman pose.

I really enjoyed this pair. They were very cooperative as I maneuvered the canoe to get this shot.

We arrived in Florida Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon I had found the one bird I had most wanted to see… We were canoeing down the Hillsborough River when I heard the distinct sound of a woodpecker. Closely resembling the call of a Flicker, it sounds like a laughing monkey. We brought the canoe to a stop and waited. Nancy spotted her first… The female Pileated woodpecker.


And her male companion was not far behind.



As of Sunday morning, he is still here.

A rare find at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, on the hill between the ice rink and the water: A Townsend’s warbler! I only saw him for a few seconds before dozens of juncos swooped in and scared him off, but I did manage to fire off some shots.

The Eastern phoebes arrived at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir over two weeks ago, but I only had a chance to photograph them recently.

In the meantime, the river has swept our friend downstream, so upstream he flies.

Domestic graylag geese use the crosswalk at the BU bridge in Cambridge.

An American goldfinch at the Houghton Garden is halfway to his spring plumage.
