Pileated Woodpecker

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

We arrived in Florida Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon I had found the one bird I had most wanted to see… We were canoeing down the Hillsborough River when I heard the distinct sound of a woodpecker. Closely resembling the call of a Flicker, it sounds like a laughing monkey. We brought the canoe to a stop and waited. Nancy spotted her first… The female Pileated woodpecker.

Townsend’s warbler

Friday, April 17th, 2009

A rare find at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, on the hill between the ice rink and the water: A Townsend’s warbler! I only saw him for a few seconds before dozens of juncos swooped in and scared him off, but I did manage to fire off some shots.
